Notes From Nueces

July 27, 2017 | Issue #693

Nueces County Budget will be a tough one this year

As of the writing of this article the official budget has not been presented. As a matter of information the Nueces County Judge is charged with presenting the budget to the Commissioners Court. What that means is Judge Loyd Neal along with the court has budget hearings and sees budget requests from the different departments. The Judge then meets with the Budget Staff and the County Auditor and presents an official budget to the court for consideration. While that has not occurred the rumblings around the courthouse is that this will be a very tight budget year. So what that means is there will be a temptation to raise taxes to meet the budget requests by different departments. All requests made will not automatically make the final cut for the initial budget but there have been a lot asked for this year. I will, as I always do keep you posted as things come to light. I along with the court will continue to fight hard to protect your tax dollars and spend them wisely.

Re-Election announcement has been received positively

I want to thank the hundreds of people who have already responded positively to my announcement for re-election. I appreciate the support and continue to ask for your support. As previously mentioned I will have two kickoff events this fall. There will be one in Corpus Christi and one in Port Aransas. I hope you can attend. It has been an honor to serve and I look forward to the continuation of that service. If you would like to add your name to my support list please email me at

Flour Bluff Health Fair set for August 10

I am pleased to announce the Flour Bluff Health Fair will be occurring on Thursday August 10, 2017 from Noon to 4 pm. It will be held at the Teaching Theater at Flour Bluff High School. It is FREE to the public and I hope you will attend and take advantage of FREE physicals and many other FREE health services. Thank you to Flour Bluff ISD for continuing to support their community by helping me put this great health fair on. I am attempting to get dates from Seashore Academy and Port Aransas ISD for their health fairs as well.

New Pier lights at Bob Hall and Horace Caldwell piers make a difference

If you have not had a chance lately to go to either Bob Hall Pier on North Padre Island or Horace Caldwell Pier in Port A go check out the great new lights that I along with Judge Loyd Neal funded to get put in place. They went up quick and the difference is substantial.  Our piers are a nice source of revenue for the County and a great attraction to our beautiful Nueces County Beaches. Please go and enjoy.

As always thank you for the opportunity to serve. It is appreciated.  If you need to contact me please do so at or 361-888-0268.

I am pleased to announce that I am running for re-election as Nueces County Commissioner Precinct 4. It has been an honor to serve and I look forward to the continuation of the work I have started. For the 2 budget cycles I have been involved in I led the court in the effort to not raise property taxes. It was not easy but with your help and support we did it!

I have directed millions of dollars with the Commissioners Courts support to enhance the Padre Balli and I B Magee facilities on North Padre Island Port A respectfully. I have supported and been involved with numerous organizations and causes throughout Precinct 4 all while not raising property taxes as promised. I have been heavily involved and visible in my precinct and will continue to be. We have a good team at Nueces County that works together to get things done. I would like to continue my efforts.

I am excited to announce my intention to run for re-election and I need your help. If you are willing to allow me to use your name as a supporter please contact me at  and let me know. I will have two kickoff events in the fall and would appreciate your support and use of your name. Thank you for the opportunity to serve.

Wow is all I can say! Nueces County really stepped up to help children with Diabetes go to summer camp. There are so many great causes in Nueces County and so many people raising money for their causes. So to be able to raise $38,000 from a 5K run on North Padre Island is astounding. Thank you to all the volunteers, sponsors and runners who helped make this year’s Brent Chesney Sandcastle Run a huge success. We will be back next year to keep helping children with Diabetes go to summer camp. THANK YOU!

We have had a rough go at Padre Balli Park. There have been issues we have been dealing with including landscaping, road ways and other things. I believe we have a handle on that now and the project should be moving forward. It has taken far too long but I have been working hard along with the Parks Board and Parks Board Director to make this a wonderful revenue generating, quality of life enhancing project.

One of the first things I did after taking office was committing millions of dollars to the Padre Balli and IB Magee facilities. I believe strongly in getting a great return on investment for your tax dollars. Padre Balli and IB Magee generate revenue and create a positive quality of life in Nueces County. So once these facilities are upgraded more visitors will be able to visit our beautiful beaches with enhanced facilities and more room to bring their RV’s and stay on our beautiful beaches. Those fine visitors will spend money in our county which will help bring more money to our local merchants while bringing more revenue to Nueces County to help me continue to try hard to not raise property taxes as we have done for the last two budget cycles.

Keep your eyes open for a groundbreaking this year in Port Aransas for our improvement project slated to happen there as well.

I am pleased to announce that I am once again sponsoring a free health fair for the Flour Bluff community on Thursday August 10 during school registration at Flour Bluff High School. This health fair will have FREE PHYSICALS which will count as athletic physicals and many other free services. Immunizations will be available. This was a huge success the last two years I have done this and I hope you will mark your calendars now for this FREE event. I will be attempting to set these FREE health fairs up at Seashore and Port Aransas schools as well. We had a very successful one at Veterans Memorial High School honoring our Veterans as well last year and hope to repeat that one.  I appreciate the opportunity to serve you. Please call on me for any help at or 361-888-0268.
